Like no other organisation, the SS represented the structure and criminal character of National Socialism. This publication brings together for the first time numerous new facets of the history of the SS on the basis of the current state of research. Renowned authors offer overviews of selected aspects of the SS's development. The book's contributions interweave the history of the Wewelsburg and the Niederhagen concentration camp with the overall history of the SS. The result is a panorama that encompasses the structure and radicalisation of the SS, ideology and terror, hubris and reality, as well as continuities that have continued from 1945 to the present.
