Description
Volume 71 of the series "War in History". Joachim Peiper (1915-1976), Himmler's favourite and his adjutant from 1938 to 1941, was the ideal-typical "model officer" of the Waffen-SS, an exponent of the Junker school generation, whose members shaped the ruthless spirit of their troops as young commanders in the second half of the war. After 1945, the highly decorated regimental commander of the "Leibstandarte", although convicted as a war criminal, became the icon of all Waffen SS apologists. In his comprehensive biography, Jens Westemeier dismantles the myth of Peiper and the Waffen SS. And he does even more: he shows how influential circles in the young Federal Republic dealt with the Nazi past. For the first time it becomes clear how and why the man sentenced to death in 1946 for the Malmedy massacre was able to advance to become a respected Porsche employee ten years later - with the help of a network of "old comrades" in politics and society.
