Description
The Banater Swabians had lived in Southeast Europe since the 18th century. Their identity as Germans continued to have an impact, as did their experiences as a minority in a foreign land for more than 150 years. When German units occupied Yugoslavia in 1941, they were euphorically welcomed by the Banater Swabians. As the ethnic German SS division "Prinz Eugen", they then took part in the cruel fight against the Yugoslav partisans. A striking example of how ethnic conflicts can work for centuries and break out anew in the cruellest of ways.
