Description
Volume 74 of the series "War in History". Current research findings to better understand the Waffen-SS. The texts by relevant experts collected in this volume explore previously neglected subject areas and develop new questions on the history of the armed SS. They include biographical, structural, social and operations history approaches. Questions are asked about the role of female personnel in the Waffen-SS, about networks within the leadership corps, and about the motivation of foreign volunteers and forced recruits. The book also offers studies on soldiers who came from Yugoslavia, Romania, Estonia, Denmark and Norway. Both war crimes and the participation of Waffen SS units in the Holocaust are explained by way of example. The military achievements of the Waffen-SS on the battlefield are the subject of exemplary analyses. Thus a differentiated picture of the Waffen-SS, its organisational structure, its personnel and its units emerges, which in its entirety goes beyond the monographic accounts available so far.
