Description
This three-volume work on the history of Panzerregiment 11, Panzerabteilung 65 and Panzerersatz- und Ausbildungsabteilung 11 describes the path of these troop bodies from their formation in October 1937 to their disbandment in May 1945. In special section 1 "Twenty Months Apart" the operations of the 1st Division of Panzer Regiment 11 are described. In special section 2 "Geheimunternehmen Greif" the deployment of the 4th Company/Tank Regiment 11 in the Battle of the Bulge 1944/45 is described. In special part 3 "Die Truppe in der Heimat" the history of the Panzer Ersatz- und Ausbildungsabteilung 11 is presented.
The Abteilung had come from Russia and had been transferred to France in April 1943 for almost a year for re-equipping on the Panther tank type. This was followed by a deployment to Galicia and retreat fighting as far as Krakow, before the remaining parts of the 1st Division were assembled at Grafenwöhr for refreshment at the end of August 1944. Under the leadership of SS-Obersturmbannführer Skorzeny, it was planned to deploy own troops disguised as Americans and equipped with booty vehicles. Among other things, bridges were to be taken across the Meuse to ensure the attack of own tank units in the direction of Antwerp. The whole enterprise ended in a fiasco and the 4th Company was devastatingly defeated during its deployment before Malmedy on 21 December 1944. Pulled out in early 1945 and transferred to Panzer Ersatz- und Ausbildungsabteilung 11 in Bielefeld, the company was re-equipped with Panthers and then transferred to the Berlin area, where various smaller operations continued until the end of April 1945. Formed in August 1939 before the start of the Polish campaign, this division was responsible for training and supplementing personnel replacements far beyond those of Panzer Regiment 11. Reorganised several times and adapted to changing requirements, the tasks of this troop in the homeland lay in the area of tension between military requirements and civilian relief measures of various levels.
