The focus of the study is on a regional historical culture that has been problematic for decades. International experts from the fields of history, archaeology and museology examine how military operations between September 1944 and February 1945 were narratively constructed into the Battle of Hürtgen Forest. The contributions analyse the mechanisms of local history production, from mythologising narratives of victimhood and apologetic portrayals of the Wehrmacht to the systematic suppression of Nazi contexts. The innovative concept of conflict landscape research reveals how material imprinting and discursive meaning production are mutually dependent. The volume also documents new concepts of mediation and contributes to a democratic culture of remembrance that faces up to its responsibility for the critical reappraisal of violence and injustice.
