In September 1944, the Allied High Command continued its advance eastwards towards the Rhine, led by the 1st US Army under Courtney Hodges, whose planned line of advance ran through a wooded area south of Aachen known as the Hürtgen Forest. On the opposite side, the German forces under the overall command of Walter Model were to do everything in their power to defend the Reich, but also to hold an outpost for the forthcoming Ardennes offensive. The Battle of the Hürtgen Forest was a gruelling and protracted engagement in which victory was measured not in kilometres but in metres and yards, as the terrain was heavily wooded, criss-crossed by razor-sharp ridges and steep cliffs and the road network was inadequate. This study explores the first phase of this bloody battle, including the "Aachen Question" that faced the Allies. With stunning imagery, detailed maps and diagrams, and photographs from the period, this book provides an account of the infamous battle in the Hürtgen Forest and concludes with an assessment of the situation in November 1944 and preparations for the next phase of operations.
