War is a universal feature of world history. This book discusses the relationship between political power, legitimate rule and violence in an attempt to understand the nature of war. It presents key theories of war and examines the military as a social organisation. It also reflects on the professionalisation of war, the industrialisation of killing and current manifestations such as hybrid warfare and cyberwarfare. Its representations in literature and film are also considered. Furthermore, a connection is made between war and social order. It asks about the possibility of a just war, about God's peace and holy war, about the causes of war and the emergence of enemies and enemy stereotypes. This is supplemented by considerations on humanitarian interventions and human rights as possible reasons for war. In the end, the fundamental question remains: Why war?
