Description
Bern and the Confederates until 1800
In 1353, Bern concluded an "Eternal Alliance" with the countries of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. Although this alliance was not the beginning, it was an important milestone in Bern's relationship with the Old Confederation. The anniversary "650 Years of Bern in the Confederation" was the occasion for this publication, jointly written by staff of the Bernisches Historisches Museum and the State Archives of the Canton of Bern. It traces the eventful history of the city on the river Aare in the alliance network of the Confederation up to the fall of Old Bern. The most important events and developments, such as the Burgundian Wars, the Peace of Westphalia and the Peasants' War, are dealt with in 24 chapters.
