Two centuries of life between Germany and Italy that could hardly have been more different. Both loved Italy, the way of life, the culture, the language, and were decidedly Italophile. They could have been friends. But the historian Eugen Dollmann (1900-1985) and the literature student Heinz Riedt (1919-1997) went in diametrically different directions during the Second World War: Dollmann was one of the highest SS officers in occupied Italy, Riedt an anti-fascist and partisan. The author goes in search of traces in Italy and Germany and also tells the post-war story in divided Germany. Dollmann, the "dictators' interpreter", remained unmolested in the Federal Republic of Germany and ingratiated himself with the secret services. Riedt lived in the GDR until the Wall was built, translated Primo Levi's book "Ist das ein Mensch?" and spent the last years of his life on Procida.
