In Trier, separatists proclaimed the Rhenish Republic in the autumn of 1923, thereby seceding from Prussia and the German Empire. The coup failed after a month, and the Allies prevented any judicial punishment. It was only after the National Socialists seized power that the coup plotters once again came under the scrutiny of the prosecuting authorities. The study offers an annotated edition of the interrogation transcript of Hubert Marzen, a key figure in the Trier separatist coup. After years in exile in France, he fell into the hands of the Gestapo following the German occupation of France and gave testimony about the events before, during and after the crisis year of 1923. Furthermore, the study provides a comprehensive contextualisation of the events in the Trier region, from the economic and political circumstances of the early 1920s to the persecution of the separatists by the Gestapo and SD during the Nazi era.
