The Crusades had a decisive influence on the culture and experience of the Middle Ages. In addition to the Crusades to the Holy Land, Nikolas Jaspert's clear introductory work also takes into account the wars against dissenters on the Iberian Peninsula or in the Baltic region as well as against "internal enemies" of Christianity. Another focus is on the ecclesiastical orders of chivalry, which have long shaped the history of Europe. Thanks to the broad scope of the subject and the systematic-chronological approach, the author succeeds in embedding the Crusades in the general phenomenon of "European expansion".
Nikolas Jaspert, born in 1962, studied history, art history, Hispanic studies and English studies in Berlin and Madrid.
