Carl Erdmann (1898-1945) was one of the most important German medievalists of the 20th century. His main work, The Origin of the Crusade Idea (1935), is still considered an international classic. In addition to his scholarly brilliance, however, he was also distinguished by his upright stance: As a convinced opponent of the National Socialists, he spent his decisive professional years in the academic precariat. Instead of a professorship, he was deprived of his teaching licence; in May 1945, the soldier Carl Erdmann was buried in a mass grave near Zagreb.
In honour of "The great Erdmann", as he is still called in the Anglo-Saxon world, the prize of the German Association of Historians for outstanding qualification work was named the "Carl Erdmann Prize". After decades, the Wissenschaftliche Buchgesellschaft (WBG) is now making this major work by Carl Erdmann accessible again, with an afterword by Folker Reichert.
