In 1328, the Capetian dynasty came to an end. This was the trigger for the Hundred Years' War, in which the English kings sought to assert their claim to the French throne by force of arms. Harsh defeats on the battlefields of Crécy and Poitiers shook the French kingdom. Although there was a period of calm under Bertrand du Guesclin, the English under Henry V soon prepared for an even more devastating attack. When the king died in 1422, he was succeeded by Henry VI, then nine months old. Twenty more years would pass before the English army was driven out of France. The disintegration of the empire continued until 1429.
This work deals with the role of both the English and French armies, examining in detail and with the aid of numerous illustrations, some in colour, their structure and organisation, equipment and weapons. It also describes the slow regeneration of France, triggered among others by the young visionary Joan of Arc, which finally culminated in France becoming the most important war power in Europe.
