Description
It is the famous illuminator Jean Colombe from the magnificent volume "Les Très Riches Heures" who lent his art to Sébastien Mamerot's manuscript on the French Crusades. The lavishly painted 277 parchment leaves are in the French National Library of Antiquities as "Les Passages d'Outremer" (Voyages Overseas). They have been reproduced in true colour for this beautiful illustrated book, with explanations.
They depict battles, funerals, coronations and processions and, together with the exciting text, bring to life the three centuries of extremely arduous crusades, marked by religious mania. Complete translation of the manuscript as well as the 66 colour miniature pictures by Jean Colombe. An outstanding testimony to medieval book illumination.
