The ecclesiastical orders of chivalry emerged in the 12th and 13th centuries against the background of the Crusades in the Holy Land, the Iberian Peninsula and the Baltic States. They soon gained widespread support and were able to spread throughout Latin Europe. However, while the Order of the Temple was dissolved as early as the beginning of the 14th century and the Iberian orders of chivalry were effectively secularised at the end of the 15th century, the Knights of St John/Maltes in particular, as well as the Teutonic Order, have persisted to this day, albeit in a modified form.
The spiritual orders of chivalry brought together the opposites of secular warfare and spiritual life. Against the background of this field of tension, Sarnowsky traces the development of the orders of chivalry in a trenchant and well-founded manner from their beginnings to the present day on the basis of overarching themes.
