Description
The white cross on a red background stands for the Order of Malta, which is the oldest humanitarian organisation in the world with a history of almost 1000 years. During this period, a pious hospital fraternity in Jerusalem merged into a spiritual order of the Catholic Church. Along this history, essential stages of the encounter between Christian Europe and the Arab and Asia Minor region become visible.
On the side of the knights, this path was accompanied by military boldness, worldly power, deep religiosity and self-sacrificing care for the sick and needy. Today, more than 100,000 people around the world are active for the Order of Malta and its works, in spectacular large-scale missions as well as in the silence of the sickroom. A breathtaking piece of European history, illustrated with previously unpublished pictures. 1000 years of the Order's history told in a compact and comprehensible way.
