Description
A book dedicated to the monastic-military orders created during the Crusades. The Order of the Knights of the House of St Mary of the Teutonic Order, together with that of the Temple, is the best known and least understood Order, a victim of the conflicting nationalist myths of the Germans, Poles and Russians. It was the knights of the Teutonic Order who opened the lands of northern Europe bordering the Baltic Sea to history, with consequences that continue to this day, as do the castles, fortresses and cities they built.
The book contains the first translation of the Rule of the Order into Italian, including the Statutes and the Rule of the Teutonic Order in the oldest known version, the Middle German version of 1264, a fundamental document for understanding the true nature of the Order, as well as an in-depth analysis of the history of the Teutonic Order and its role in the conquest and evangelisation of the Baltic States from the 13th to the 16th centuries. In this way, the dual nature of the knights with the black cross as monks and warriors can be fully understood.
