After a long, consuming illness, the French general Louis-Lazare Hoche died in Wetzlar on 19 September 1797, aged 29. Amidst great expressions of honour from friends and enemies, his body is transferred to Koblenz, where he finds his temporary resting place next to General Marceau on the Petersberg in Lützel. 24 June 2018 marked the 250th anniversary of Hoche's birth. To mark the occasion, this book not only recounts his short life, but also provides insights into the trials and tribulations of the French Revolution, of which he was almost a victim.
General Hoche's efforts to stabilise the Republic against both internal and external enemies are also recounted, as are his efforts to integrate the German territories on the left bank of the Rhine in an efficient and tolerable manner for the benefit of France. This was unfortunately called into question after his early death
