This book provides a new understanding of intelligence in the Napoleonic period, describing it in its European and transnational rather than its purely national dimension. Numerous cases of espionage and terrorism, traditionally studied separately and each with its own explanations, are presented in a new light.
In 14 chapters, Gérard Arboit opens up new research perspectives both for the history of intelligence and for Napoleonic studies. He sheds new light on the coup d'état of 1799, terrorism, electoral manipulation in Britain, special operations and even economic spiuonage. He also sheds light on France's failure in Spain, showing its uniqueness in obtaining militarily relevant information, highlighting the treachery of Fouché and Talleyrand. The book also opens up new areas of research that have been ignored until now, such as affairs in the Orient and South America. Finally, the book reveals the emperor's unprecedented appetite for intelligence right up to the last moments of his reign and in exile. A novel look at the imperial era through which the underlying networks are revealed.
