co-creator of his epoch, founder of the "levée en masse", brought out from under the cloak of historical oblivion. Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot, born on Sunday 13 May 1753 in Nolay, Burgundy, died in exile on 2 August 1823 in Magdeburg. His mortal remains were transferred to the Pantheon on 02 August 1889, and he thus belongs to the French "immortals". His three main spheres of activity as a soldier, scientist and politician reveal numerous, sometimes divergent but often simultaneous personality traits, which are examined in the study. One thing, however, runs through and unites them all: patriotism, a sense of responsibility, duty, humanity and resilience as fundamental and not only political values - then as now.
