At the end of the 18th century, Prussia and Austria were regarded as important European superpowers, but they had already passed their zenith. The French Revolution of 1789 presented both countries with the challenge of how to take action against this system, which had broken all previous rules. The attempt seemed to be crowned with success by defeating France militarily and restoring the old conditions in Paris. As early as 1792 in Valmy, the plan did not work out. Finally, Prussia withdrew into neutrality in 1795 and Austria finally fell by the wayside in December 1800, despite interim successes at Salzburg. The years of the struggle against revolutionary France up to the peace treaty after the Second War of the Coalition are recounted.
