Guillaume Emanuel Guignard Count of Saint-Priest, a noble representative of the French Ancien Regime, went through an aerial career typical of his time: education in high noble circles, further education abroad, emigration from France during the French Revolution and military service in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.
However, he was better educated than many of his compatriots, spoke at least five languages, had studied mathematics and philosophy, and became a general staff officer and adjutant to Tsar Alexander I.
Guillaume Emanuel eventually commanded a corps in General Blücher's Silesian Army as a hardy and highly decorated officer and crossed the Rhine with his soldiers at Koblenz on New Year's Eve 1813. During the French campaign of 1814, he was mortally wounded at Reims. Even today he is better known in Russia than in France, which is why his family had to have his remains exhumed and his funerary monument removed from Laon Cathedral.
