Vauban not only knew how to build, besiege, capture or defend hundreds of squares, but was also a pioneer of economic and social thought. Published in 2007 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the death of Vauban (1633-1707), the book presents not only the work of the engineer and architect of fortifications, but also his writings, which is why the subtitle was "La Pierre et la Plume" (Stone and Pen). The following year, twelve sites fortified by Vauban were inscribed on the World Heritage List of Humanity for their outstanding universal value.
Each of the sites represents an emblematic example of a fortification (mountain, estuary, tower and citadel fortification) and belongs to a network, the Sites Majeurs de Vauban. This edition takes account of this recognition by UNESCO by including a new chapter, written by Michèle Virol, presenting the classified sites. The historiography on fortification, siege warfare, engineers and Vauban has become richer in the last decade, and all authors have taken this into account.
