In the midst of the War of Secession, the James family farm in Missouri is devastated by Northern soldiers. Their brutality awakens a burning desire in young Jesse: Revenge! That's why he joins the Bushwackers of "Bloody Bill" Anderson, who wage a bloodthirsty guerrilla war against the Union, following a distorted image of morality. But every war ends eventually and in an America whose wounds are now slowly healing, Jesse James is nothing more than a criminal. But while he and the rest of his gang become wanted enemies of the state, some Southerners still see Jesse as a kind of folk hero who will avenge the honour of the vanquished.
Under the direction of historian Farid Ameur, "The True Story of the Wild West" traces the careers of the most charismatic figures of the time. The scenarists and illustrators combine their respect for the cherished conventions of the genre with an unconditional commitment to historical veracity. In this way, both the light and the dark sides of the Wild West are presented without completely dissolving the myth. Each album in the series is self-contained and includes a historical appendix.
