Description
In the 17th century, the Kingdom of Sweden rose to become the dominant power in the Baltic Sea region. The increased self-confidence of the Swedish nobility, citizens and merchants associated with this rise meant that they wanted to join the ranks of the other European colonial powers. A trading company was founded with the aim of establishing settlements on the Delaware River in North America in order to participate in the lucrative fur and tobacco trade.
From 1638 to 1655, this Swedish colony existed in the area of the Delaware and Susquehannock Indians under the name Nya Sverige - New Sweden. In his eighth book, Siegfried Jahn tells the story of a colony about which little is known in Germany.
