Patrick Brennan, a long-time student of the Civil War and editorial advisor to The Civil War Monitor magazine, has teamed up with his tech-savvy daughter Dylan Brennan to bring Gettysburg into the 21st century with Gettysburg in Colour. Vol. 1: Brandy Station to the Peach Orchard and Vol. 2: The Wheatfield to Falling Waters. The third and final volume examines the transformation of the battlefield from a post-battle hellscape to an American memorial. The Brennans used a computer-assisted colour recognition algorithm based on artificial intelligence to determine the general colours of uniforms, skin, hair, equipment, terrain, houses and much more. Further research was conducted to refine the exact colours. The result is a monumental, colourful study of this important three-day battle as never seen before. The intensive colourisation of the woodcuts from the battle, for example, reveals a wealth of detail that has remained hidden from generations of viewers. The photos of the soldiers, their officers and the returning veterans look as if they were taken yesterday. "Gettysburg in Colour. Vol. 3: Sacred Ground, 1863-1938" describes the eventful and fascinating history up to the eve of World War II, highlighting the cleanup after the battle, the establishment of the National Cemetery, the land acquisition and memorial movement, the three major anniversaries, Camp Colt and the 1922 reenactment by the Navy, and the creation of the National Military Park. Even the impact of the automobile revolution and its profound influence on the park are covered in an entertaining and detailed manner.
