Description
Towards the end of the 19th century, the beautiful Wallowa Valley, the ancestral territory of the Nez Percé, is coveted by settlers who are lured by gold and rich grazing grounds. After long but ultimately fruitless negotiations, the indigenous people are forced to give way and leave their land west of the Oregon to avoid armed conflict. Under the leadership of Chief Joseph, they decide to embark on a perilous trek, with almost 800 souls, including women, children and the elderly, and thousands of horses, heading for Canada. But the American army was hot on their heels, and after more than 2000 kilometres, the Nez Percé's courageous odyssey ended in defeat at the hands of Colonel Miles' troops. Chief Joseph's surrender and the Nez Percé's arduous journey remain an eternal monument to the peaceful resistance of the Natives against the greed of the colonialists.
