Bernard Cornwell's Viking novels are incredibly successful and unbelievably good. The Last Kingdom" has also been a great success as a TV series. The ninth historical novel in the series about the warrior Uhtred, entitled "The Dark Warriors", takes us back to the 9th century, when the English nation was formed in the struggle between Northmen and Anglo-Saxons. A fragile peace reigns in England. The kingdom of Mercia in the north is now ruled by Æthelflæd, daughter of the late King Alfred. On the northern border of the country she has installed her most experienced warlord, Uhtred is his name. And from the north also comes the enemy, a mighty army of Irish and Northmen, led by the redoubtable Ragnall Iverson. Ragnall has a brother with whom Uhtred has competed in the past, whom he respects as a warrior - and to whom he has given his daughter in marriage. Doubt soon arises in the kingdom of Mercia as to what Uhtred will ultimately feel more bound to: fealty oath or blood relationship.
