The Austrian Victor Weisskopf (19082002) was a great physicist. He studied under Wolfgang Pauli, Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrödinger in Leipzig and Berlin. Before the Anschluss, he was forced to leave the country because of his Jewish heritage. In the United States, he became a member of the Manhattan Project and was involved in the development of the atomic bomb. By the time he fully realised the consequences of his work, it was too late. Weisskopf subsequently became a vehement opponent of nuclear weapons. Was this a belated realisation of the moral dilemma of nuclear physics or a logical conclusion by a man who later became a professor at MIT and director at CERN? The author recounts the life story of the physicist and passionate pianist in an exciting and well-researched manner.
