Description
In November 1942, decisions were made in several theatres of war: in the Battle of El Alamein, Egypt; on the Pacific island of Guadalcanal; in Stalingrad. Events that bring about the turning point of the Second World War and which Peter Englund tells in a way that is as global as it is dense and close to the people, entirely from the point of view of those who experienced this war: among them a German submarine commander in the North Atlantic, a twelve-year-old girl in Shanghai, a Soviet infantryman in Stalingrad, a partisan in the Belorussian forests, a journalist in Berlin, a housewife on Long Island.
In addition, well-known figures such as Sophie Scholl, Ernst Jünger or Albert Camus are lightly woven into the grand narrative. In this way, we follow the turn of the war as excitingly as in a novel - and experience what drives all these people, feel their fears and hopes, heroism and despair. An epic work of history that takes us from the desert of North Africa to the deadly cold of Russia, from distant islands in the West Pacific to the German capital. And at the same time a grandiose piece of "anti-history" that makes the existential dimension of war tangible in individual fates.
