The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 is today the most important symbol of Polish heroism and the desire for freedom during the Second World War. But it was also a national catastrophe, as the Germans responded with extreme brutality: with mass executions and deportations, followed by the systematic destruction of the capital. At least 150,000 civilian deaths and hundreds of thousands more deportees were mourned.
Stephan Lehnstaedt shows how the German crimes and the Red Army's wait-and-see attitude led to the failure of this extraordinary resistance operation after more than two months. The "Wars of the Modern Age" series, published by the Bundeswehr Centre for Military History and Social Sciences, presents the most important military conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries according to the latest scientific findings and explains their historical causes and political consequences.
