Kurt von Schleicher (1882-1934), Reich Minister of the Armed Forces and last Chancellor of the Weimar Republic, has long been treated very carelessly and contradictorily in historiography. In more recent research, Schleicher appears as a man who tried to protect the young republic from ultra-right and ultra-left forces as well as from foreign powers. It was these lofty political goals that Schleicher had to pay for with his death after his brief chancellorship.
The cowardly murder of him, insidiously planned by his opponents and carried out in cold blood on 30 June 1934, in which Schleicher's wife was also killed, led Germany definitively into the Nazi dictatorship. Hans-Dieter Nahme describes for the first time the exact sequence of events, the background and the consequences of the assassination. In doing so, the author sheds light on the perpetrators, their fellow travellers and the downfall of the Reichswehr.
