Description
With well over 1 million women serving in the German Wehrmacht during World War II, they were belittled as "Blitzmädel" (lightning girls), but were indispensable as intelligence and anti-aircraft assistants, in the military hospitals, in the Luftwaffe and in the Kriegsmarine. This volume sheds light on the background and operations of this almost forgotten auxiliary force in the Wehrmacht and compares them with the role of women soldiers in the armed forces of the Allies - from Russian snipers and the famous "night witches" of the Soviet Air Force to the British women soldiers of the WAAF and the last contingent of the Imperial Japanese Army.
