Walter Lüdde-Neurath became adjutant to Grand Admiral Dönitz in September 1944. In the spring of 1945, he witnessed the collapse of the German Reich, the capitulation of the German Wehrmacht and the violent dissolution of the government at the centre of events. On his own initiative, but with the approval of his boss, he recorded the events, meetings and orders of the last head of state of the German Reich, who was surprised by his appointment. The immediacy of the account of his experiences and the urgency of the scholarly survey contribute significantly to the clarification of this fateful period in the last days of the Third Reich.
