The never-before-published memoirs of a Reich office leader about personalities of contemporary history and events in the inner sphere of power of the Third Reich provide fascinating insights into the years 1933 to 1945. Walter Tießler (1903-1984), a National Socialist since 1922, held an important position on the "staff of the Deputy of the Führer" Rudolf Hess as liaison to the Reich Minister of Propaganda Dr Joseph Goebbels and later to the Governor General Hans Frank in Krakow.
He recalls his political life in retrospect - after returning home from war captivity - from his prison cell. Coming from a humble background, he sought political guidance, including from the Communists - even when he was already a member of the NSDAP. Open to the problems of the time, he made a nuisance of himself with the party leadership in the "Brown House" in Munich, but did not allow himself to be silenced by the party presidency. Tießler was expelled, then readmitted, and addressed Adolf Hitler directly with complaints about undesirable developments. His interesting account of the inner workings of the party, of the intrigues and jealousies of the Nazi officials, all the way up to the Reich Cabinet, clearly shows how the often competing structures of the Nazi government apparatus functioned, and the advantages and disadvantages of these structures.
