This book was written on the basis of diary entries by a German compatriot who celebrated his nineteenth birthday in the cauldron of Stalingrad. Scarred by the icy steppes, death, hunger and privation, he dreamed of liberation from the Red Army's cauldron as a German soldier in a state of boiler fever. For three months, the bloody battle raged between German and Soviet troops for Stalin's city and the surrounding area west of the Volga. Everywhere you looked, corpses, cadavers, burnt-out tanks, rubble and more rubble. The snow formed a shroud for an entire army.
