The Battle of Stalingrad, today's Volgograd, lasted more than half a year and is still considered a turning point in the war between Germany and the Soviet Union. The battle, which began in autumn 1942 with the German attack on the Russian city on the Volga and ended in February 1943 with the de facto surrender of the German 6th Army, claimed around 700,000 lives, most of them on the Russian side. The Second World War was far from over, but this battle is still of central importance in the collective memory of the nations involved.
The author not only analyses the actual course of events from a military-historical perspective, but also looks at the culture of remembrance surrounding Stalingrad.
