Walter Heinlein was an officer in the German 2nd Armoured Division. In this work, he recalls his service in Panzer Artillery Regiment 74 from 1940 to 1945. Heinlein recounts his early experiences in the French and Greek campaigns, and he recounts years of service as a forward artillery observer in the front line on the Eastern Front. In 1943, he was appointed chief of a battery of self-propelled guns of the type "Wespe". Heinlein proved himself with it in the tank battle of Kursk and the retreat battles into 1944.
This was followed by deployment on the invasion front and the Battle of the Bulge, in the course of which he fell into Allied captivity. This book is the account of a highly decorated front-line soldier. Walter Heinlein holds a certificate of commendation from the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, the German Cross in Gold and the Medal of Honour. Furthermore, he was twice nominated for the award of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross for his service. 56 previously unpublished photos. 201 pages.
