In September 1941, the Free French Air Force named its combat units after occupied French provinces. Bomber Group No. 1, which had just been formed from Reserve Bomber Group No. 1 (veterans of Soufra and Abyssinia), was given the name "Lorraine". Equipped with Bristol Blenheim aircraft, it took part in Operation Crusader in Libya against German and Italian forces.
In early 1943, the "Lorraine" was returned to England and equipped with Douglas Bosen aircraft. It was then used in low-level bombing raids, in the destruction of V-1 launch sites and in the Normandy landing operations. A few weeks before the end of hostilities, the unit was finally converted to the medium bomber "Mitchell" to fly its last combat missions over Germany. The reader follows the unit's aviators in combat from the Kufra Oasis to the ruins of the German Reich.
