After the First World War, the French Air Force was reorganised into flying regiments. They inherited the squadrons that had fought for four years above the trenches. For their part, some of their regiments were used in air operations in the Levant and Morocco. The air force, which gradually became independent, also relied on a structure of schools, technical support services, an air corps and, briefly, units for defence against aircraft.
The symbolism used in the squadrons is rich and varied, sometimes novel, both on the aircraft and on the emblems of the units. The Luftwaffe was created in 1933, but it was not created out of thin air; it adopted the pre-existing structures, practices and traditions of inter-war military aviation.
