The "Ardennes" fighter squadron is a special unit in the organisation chart of the French Air Force. It will celebrate its 80th anniversary in 2023. The authors thought it appropriate to take this anniversary as an opportunity to review the history of the unit. The unit was disbanded and re-established several times. Only the BR 44 squadron, which was incorporated into the squadron at a late stage, has its origins in the First World War. The "Wild Boars" did not appear until 1943. Even though the "Ardennes" are not an F.A.F.L. unit for chronological reasons, the majority of the personnel share the spirit of this unit.

They were the first French aviation unit to use the P-47. During Operation "700" in the Suez region, the "Wild Boars" flew the F-84F. The Mirage 5F did not have the opportunity to prove itself in foreign missions, but its successor, the "Jaguar", did so successfully. The Mirage 2000D took part in all foreign missions, and the expertise of the "Ardennes" is closely linked to this aircraft.
