Descriptionof Cent pour Sang. L'histoire du 100e groupe de bombardement de la 8e Air Force 1943-1945
They carried out their first missions from England in the spring of 1943. They circled their "Flying Fortresses" almost daily over occupied Europe to destroy Germany's war machine. Their bravery and the appalling losses they suffered earned them the nickname the "bloody hundredth". The navigator Harry H. Crosby - who served as the inspiration for one of the characters in the "Masters of the Air" series produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg - arrived with the very first crews and left with the very last.
After overcoming his fear and gaining competence and confidence, he was promoted to chief navigator of the group and survived 32 missions, sometimes involving up to two thousand aircraft. In his humorous and action-packed war memoirs, he gives us an insight into the heart and mind of these airmen, a group of "kids" who were thrown half fearlessly, half unsuspectingly into the maelstrom of aerial warfare.
