With its graceful silhouette and shrill whistle, the "Gazelle" is a helicopter whose sight has been familiar since its first flight more than 55 years ago. Originally designed as a pure observation helicopter, it has been used far beyond this role and has even evolved into a true combat helicopter in many armed forces that have acquired it.
In the Falkland Islands, the Middle East, the Balkans and Africa, the "Gazelle" has been involved in almost every conflict over the past four decades. Now that the "Gazelle's" career on the front lines with its military users is coming to an end and it has become a popular collector's item, it is time to review its history. This book tells the story of the "Gazelle" (from the first designs to the end of series production) and the technical developments it introduced into the world of rotorcraft (in particular the famous streamlined tail rotor "Fenestron"), provides a detailed description of the helicopter before giving as complete an overview as possible of all the countries that have used the "Gazelle" in their armed forces or government services, and also looks at the civilian career of this iconic aircraft.
