Shortly after the Allied landings in southern France in August 1944, the Battle of Montélimar was a first attempt to destroy the retreating German forces in the Rhône Valley. The American divisions attempted to encircle the German troops in an area blocked by the Rhône to the east and the Drôme to the north, whose bridges had been destroyed by French resistance.
On 28 August, fierce fighting ensued with the German 11th Panzer Division and two other infantry divisions, with American troops eventually intervening in their fray. The battle ended on 31 August with the liberation of Montélimar and Valence. The battle cost the Germans many men and equipment, but most of their troops escaped to Lyon.
