500 years ago, the entire Allgäu was in turmoil: from Christmas 1524 onwards, the peasants, and later all the "little people", rebelled against the authorities and serfdom, which at the time was handled excessively by the Allgäu monasteries. Added to this were the relentless collection of ever-increasing taxes and other economic burdens. The Allgäu peasants joined together and in March 1525 formulated the famous 12 Articles - one of the first written demands for human rights and freedom in Europe - as well as the federal regulations of their "Christian Association". In doing so, they laid an important intellectual foundation for the development of the modern European constitution. Although the peasants were ultimately bloodily defeated by their authorities, this defeat also signalled the beginnings of political participation by the "common man", even though serfdom was not finally abolished until 300 years later.
