In Völkershausen near Vacha in April 1525, the local farmers are at odds with their lord, who stubbornly refuses to appoint a Protestant-Lutheran pastor. Within a few days, thousands of peasants gathered on the Werra meadows near Vacha to show their sympathy with the inhabitants and possibly to support them with armed force. The Werra pile with around 6000 farmers is formed. It is decided to march along the Werra to Meiningen. However, Meiningen refuses to open its town gates to the Werrahaufen. A large group of peasants from Franconia has already occupied the town. For this reason, the peasant leaders of the Werrra rebellion, which has now grown to around 10,000, decide to move northwards again. The more radical part of the insurgents decided to march to Mühlhausen to Müntzer to continue the fight under his leadership; another part went home. The march continues via Mühlhausen to Frankenhausen, where the decisive battle against the princely armies takes place, which ends with the defeat of the peasant army. The content of the book gives readers an insight into the life of the rural population 500 years ago; it describes the opposing views of the fiercest adversaries Martin Luther and Thomas Müntzer and tells the story of the Werrahaufen from its formation to its end in the approximately four weeks of its existence in April to May of 1525. The photos included in the book show relics that have survived to this day, which were attacked by the Werrahaufen and could possibly inspire a visit.
