The story of the defeat that almost defeated the Kingdom of France. Pavia is an event with European resonance. The four-month siege of the Lombard city and the battle itself brought together thousands of fighters from different backgrounds who fought here in the service of the King of France, the Emperor and the Duke of Milan. But of course it is in France that this tragic episode of the Italian Wars has the greatest impact: The army is destroyed, the peninsula is lost, King Francis I is captured by his mortal enemy, Emperor Charles V. It was the worst French defeat since Azincourt during the Hundred Years' War! After a year of humiliating captivity in Madrid, the king will spend the rest of his life trying to avert this bitter failure. Julien Guinand, a scholar and specialist in the 16th century, delves deep into the battles, which he brings back to life in a marvellous way. The book does away with conventional ideas about the event, in particular the overrated role of artillery and the protagonists' art of war. As with all the works in the "Champs de bataille" series, the reader can rely on a book with colour maps and a precise order of battle.
