The catastrophe of the Vatican at the height of its splendour. Rome was at the height of the High Renaissance when, on 6 May 1527, an army of the all-Catholic Emperor Charles V stormed the Eternal City and subsequently established a veritable regiment of terror on the Tiber - sacco di roma. After the capture of Rome, Pope Clement VII had to spend months as a prisoner in Castel Sant'Angelo in his own capital. Events are brought to a head by the fact that a large proportion of the imperial mercenaries are Lutheran-minded mercenaries who believe they are fighting the Antichrist in person.
