Volume 8 of the "Begleithefte zur Dauerausstellung im Landesmuseum für Vorgeschichte Halle". The Kingdom of the Thuringians lasted only a mere 80 years (455531 AD), but laid the foundation for the state structures of the following centuries in Central Germany. It was one of the greatest powers in the Germanic world. Emerging only in the mid-5th century AD, its sphere of influence in the early 6th century stretched from the middle Elbe River to south of the Main River and west to the Werra Riverthe dividing line between the rival Franks (west) and the Goths (south). The Thuringians joined the alliance system of the Ostrogothic king Theodoric against the expanding Frankish kingdom. However, dynastic strife weakened their defenses. Soon after Theodoric's death (526 AD), the Thuringians were defeated by the Franks in 531 after suffering heavy defeats on their own soil. Their society was shattered, the royal family wiped out, and ethnic groups resettled. However, certain ideas survived, such as state administration and clerical legitimacy of rule.
